With the previous two parts featuring Lancaster Services & St Peter’s Seminary<\/a>, and then Forth bridges, Scottish Parliament, Cables Wynd House and Western Generals Cancer Centre<\/a>, it was time to wake up for a day planned in the city of Glasgow. I had my bus tour ticket in my bag so I could jump on at any of the bus stops to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Overseas Airways Corporation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First on the list for today was a building not too far from my hotel, the BOAC building<\/a> which was designed by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, the work of lead architects Andy MacMillan & Isi Metzstein and it opened in 1970. It’s an odd looking building on the Buchanan Street, the bottom floor is occupied at the time of my visit by a clothes shop called Mint Velvet. The material that wraps around the buildings four sides is copper and lends the windows a strange shape, with some interesting tabs featured on one side of the building almost designed to hang a shop sign off without drilling into the frontage. There are also some cool lights in the alley to the side of the building that leads to the Lighthouse building which I think was a design museum featuring a lot of Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibits, but appears to be closed at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern, Not Modernist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nearby is the Gallery Of Modern Art<\/a> complete with a statue of Duke Of Wellington on a horse, which tradition has it should always be seen to be wearing a traffic cone atop his head. At least since the 1980s anyway. Into the gallery and a wander around led to some amazing pieces of artwork, paintings, sculptures and of course photography. There was a particular photograph that made me chuckle and appeared that it could almost be a Richard Billingham image from his work Ray’s A Laugh, but no it wasn’t, it was in fact a 1995 Untitled image by Nick Waplington <\/a>of a mum holding a baby that is being sick on the carpeted floor of their lounge. The carpet of brown with bits of rubbish all over it could have been our living room carpet when I was growing up and the scene of a vomiting kid something I’ve witnessed many times. Its an awesome moment that precedes the panic of trying to clean up a bit so it doesn’t make a huge mess on the already messy carpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also loved a photo made by Eric Watt in the 1960s titled Girl at Chalk-marked Wall in which you could see a small girl pulling a face for the camera who looks in need of a bath and a pair of shoes. Again, I bet I spent some of my childhood as grubby as this whilst my parents ran the Three Crowns pub in Wellington, Shropshire. I loved this image so bought a postcard of it in the gift shop. This is somethign I try and do from all galleries and museums that I visit as a reminder of some of the work that I’ve seen within the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building, Printing and Commerce<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Next stop was the Glasgow City College Of Building and Printing <\/a>which is currently fenced off and being prepared for a new life as the Met Tower. It once hosted many students and staff and on the top of the building there are some structures perhaps inspired by Le Corbusier who also added on features like this. The building is in a sorry state with many broken panes of glass and boards. The building that used to exist in front of it has been demolished and is no more. There did not look to be much work going on with the structure that looks like a standard tall and wide tower but the centres of the floors are wider than the two ends. It’s sad to see these buildings in this state especially after its long useful life. It was opened in 1964 by then prime minister Harold Wilson and was designed by Peter Williams of Wyllie, Shanks and Underwood who was greatly influenced by Le Corbusier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not on the list, but just opposite from the college of building and printing was the Central College Of Commerce, the Charles Oakley <\/a>building which opened in 1963, was designed by the same architects and is considered as the sister building to the Met Tower. This was also a striking building and whilst only 7 storeys tall still maintains its old school character where the 14 storey Met Tower looks more recent. Both of these buildings are Grade B Listed to help protect them somewhat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunch At The Savoy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leaving the previous two buildings behind it was time to head over to the next target, the Savoy Centre<\/a>. design by Gavin Paterson and Sons and completed in 1979. It once housed a nightclub and cinema but is now a mix of offices and art spaces but the external still looks amazing. It is right across the road from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where many students were sat on the steps enjoying the midday sunshine. The logo on the front of the building was a lovely looking piece of work and was repeated around the side of the building too, with a spot of colour. The concrete fascias of the buildings are all featuring the same finned concrete and I really find the uniformity of the windows on the taller of the buildings a real pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who’s The Mack?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A short walk away from the Savoy Centre but mostly uphill was the next target, the Bourdon Building at the Glasgow School Of Art.<\/a> As I strolled up the hills towards the Mackintosh School Of Architecture and The Glasgow School Of Art I walked past a part of the Uni in which the students were preparing for their Degree Show which started this Sunday 29th May, so I missed it by a few days. I did ask if I could have a quick look but they said it wasn’t ready yet so I carried on my merry way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon reaching the building I had a good squint around it and then jumped into making some images. THere are some lovely angles of the building and it does look like a proper school of art with stuff in thhe windows and lots of posters and stickers around the place. This Bourdon building opened in 1979 and was a product of the architects Keppie, Henderson and Partners. The buildings are openly concrete and brutalist in style with no smooth edges to appease the nay-sayers. I didn’t spend enough time here exploring and as a result I didn’t get any good wide shots showing it in it’s surroundings. I did capture some of the stilts that the two storeys above sit atop. I moved off this spot quickly as I was aware that the day was getting on and I wanted to hit a few more spots that were a way away from this position. I walked up the hill and then down the other side to Cowcaddens Subway station to get on the underground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wombling Free <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’d never ridden on the Glasgow subway before and didn’t really need to do so here, but I wanted to see what the design criteria looked like compared to the super-familiar London Underground design theme. The typeface in use on the SPT Subway is Klavika compared to the Tube’s Johnston typeface. Klavika as used on the stations and trains here on the “Clockwork Orange” also inspired the familiar original logo type for the Facebook website, I wondered why it looked familiar…. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subway is named after the Kubrick film because it is a simple loop of 15 stations and has two lines, one that runs clockwise and the other anti-clockwise (counter clockwise). The orange is obviosuly a play on the standard colour for the subway, many of the features of the trains, stations and signage all feature the unmissable colour. I wanted to use the transport to get from Cowcaddens to Kelvinhall for the next target, but I wanted to experience a few more stations so got on the Outer Line that went much further. Apparently you can do a full loop in 24 minutes. It cost me \u00a31.80 in the contactless ticket gates too, bargain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boyd Orr Bust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alighting at Kelvinhall and walking out of the station I waled up the main road towards the Boyd Orr Building <\/a>which is part of the University Of Glasgow and is a huge building that seems to be too modern to have been opened in 1972, it was designed by Dorward Mathieson Gleave & Partners and features some great walls of concrete and panels between the floors of windows. I couldn’t really get into the building but the James McCune Smith Learning Hub was open next door so I had a wander into there and saw some lovely shapes and patterns in the ceilings and walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queen Margaret Union<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Close to hand was the next on my list for the day, the student union building which features some great differences between the styles of the different levels and a quick walk inside left me feeling a familiar sense of being in a building similar to the George Wallis building back in Wolverhampton. Walking out and around to the rear of the building there was a nice set of engineered concrete steps that act as an emergency exit and also a way to get onto the roof to look out over the top of the city. There was also a nice view of the back of the Boyd Orr building from here too. Walter Underwood & Partners designed this building and it opened in 1968, since then bands such as Queen, Nirvana, The Smiths and Coldplay have all performed at QMU<\/a>. There is a large Asian Fusion restaurant in the building too that smelt lovely as I strolled around with my camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a Bute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the way to the next planned stop I strolled past 42 and 40 Bute Gardens<\/a>, huge concrete towers that houses the School of Social and Political Sciences for the University and reminds me greatly of many different buildings. On the underside of a canopy is the same inverted square bowl shape that features in the car park ceilings and the rough concrete walls remind me of the Shrewsbury Police Station. Its a big beast and the entrance canopy is also a nice addition which leads into the stairwell, but I couldn’t get into the building so I had a wander about outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mack’s Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Passing the horrendously noisy construction work going on outside 42 Bute Gdns I dropped down some stairs and around the corner to a large concrete ribbed wall. Moving further around it I could see that it was the Brutalist special, William Whitfield’s 1977 Hunterian Art Gallery and The Mackintosh House<\/a>. Upon entering the building I heard the ticket sales guy telling the person in front of me about the gallery being free but a small fee would be required to enter the Mackintosh House. When I flashed my Student Art Pass though he told me that it was a free entry, to be fair that small amount I paid last September has earned its keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dropping off my bag in the locker downstairs, as no bags were allowed in the Mackintosh House, I sat to watch a short video on the history of the place and how it was built in the Brutalist Style to accommodate a recreation of the inside of 78 Southpark Avenue where they lived between 1906-1914. The interiors were stripped before the demolition of the original house and kept for the purpose of reassembling into this collection. I’m not one for interior design and the style was not to my taste but I could see the merit in the wonderful designs from the small purple glass parts in the front door to the extremely high backed chairs and the stripy bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the wander around the house was complete I had a blast walking around the art gallery and looking at the works in there. My favourite in here was a Bridget Riley work Untitled (Fragment 6) which was a series of dots screen printed onto plexiglass in 1965. Something so simple and yet the way it played with my eyes was strange. Up close they are very sharp circles but move away and they almost grow a black haze around them that almost fizzes and moves around. I hadn’t been drinking either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tour de Glasgow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once finished at the Hunterian I walked down the hill towards Kelvinhall Museum where the sightseeing bus would stop. I could both use the bus to see more of the city, without walking on a sweltering day and also use the ticket I had purchased the day before. It was getting past 4pm so I only had two hours left to ride the bus. It stopped after only a few stops as it was at the end of the tour so I jumped on the bus parked in front which was the last of the day and went on the full tour around the city. It even took us over to the SECC Armadillo, OVO Hydro<\/a> and BBC Scotland where I have been before to film TV Game shows Eggheads and Fifteen To One. There was one building that was the Wise Group building<\/a> and I liked the look of it, to discover when writing this that it was a product of the architects Gillespie Kidd & Coia, especially Isi Metzstein and Andy MacMillan the team behind St Peter’s Seminary<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going on the tour in the bright sunshine was lovely but I did get worried about sunburn on my neck so had to turn my peaked baseball cap around so that it protected my next somewhat. Once at the terminus again, near George Square I strolled into Buchanan Street which was rammed, I sat down at an outside bar\/drinking area and ordered a Guinness Zero from the QR code and sat there watching the world walk past until the whole street had quietened down. It was gone 7pm when I finished my pint and decided what to do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mandalorian Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was too late to get my car out of the car park and drive over to Clydebank so I popped to the cinema once more to see if I found any more details in the film, Mandalorian and Grogu. After this I headed back to the hotel where I charged up all of my batteries and downloaded all the photos from the cameras onto my MacBook as insurance in case the memory cards decided to die. Then it was beddy byes until tomorrw when I’d pack and leave the city to return home. In the last part of this road trip you’ll read about my journey and the stop I made on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
