I’m currrently studying for an Undergraduate BA (Hons) in Photography and attending part time due to still having a full time job.

This academic year has seen me focus on Independent Practice Module and this has been a mixture of Practical work in the resulting portfolio of photographs and prints suitable for an exhibition and also a dissertation of 5000 words in length. My dissertation was about grief and the loss of buildings and how photography might be useful for the greiving process, for humans, pets, and places.

My practical work ultimately ended up as a collection of photographs of the local Shirehall, the former headquarters of Shropshire Council in Shrewsbury. I created work on this currently abandoned building with the aim of documenting it’s current state and the promise that it could offer. I used film and digital cameras, pinhole cameras, printing ink off walls, drone photography and even some photos indoors as I was able to work with the local Shrewsbury Civic Society.

After handing all of my work in at the end of April for the May 6th due date I sat back and relaxed a little. Today I had the official comms that the grade was up on the Canvas system.

My mark this year was 87% which is a First in terms of the class of degree that it would work out as.

Level 4 Part One: 85% Part Two: 85%

Level 5 Part One: 78% and Part Two: 88%

Level 6 Part One: 87% and Part Two: TBA in 2027

With the current 5 modules complete it gives me an average of 84.6% which would result in a First Class Degree. If I get a 0% in my final module that would give me an average of 70.5% which is a First! Except, I won’t do that because my aim is to get a better mark in my final module than all of the others that I have completed. I’m not one to sit back on my laurels and take it easy so I’ll be swot pants of the class again.

Feedback

As well as the grade documented, still possible that it may be changed, I also received some feedback from my tutor Gavin. He has been responsible for pushing me to ask questions and has given me some good examples of projects that have aligned with my photography and also my dissertation. His kind words underneath are spoken by an actor to protect his identity.

“What a deeply considered, beautifully curated body of work—one that breathes with a profound connection to both place and self. Your essay moved far beyond mere analysis, gracefully ascending into true synthesis and future vision. The way you mapped the geography of grief onto physical architecture, and then translated that into tangible frameworks for the future, was exemplary.

There is a distinct path for you here in consultancy, should you choose to take it—championing projects, for yourself and fellow artists, that breathe new life into abandoned spaces, urban redevelopment, and civic pride.

As you look to the year ahead, push this vision further. Expand its borders, whether through this building or new ones. Begin drafting Arts Council applications, and seek out collaborations with voices like Tom Hicks or recent graduates like Sophie. You are capturing the very ghost of our post-service economy—a world where humanity feels increasingly untethered by artificial intelligence, yet remains anchored to reality by the raw weight of concrete and the quiet faded circular echoes of former drawing pins in a wall.” (Gavin Rogers, 2026)

I’m stoked at receiving this feedback from Gavin as I respect his opinions and his work ethic. The first paragraph of the feedback is about my use of the photos to help with the portfolio and the dissertation on grief.

The second paragraph is a bit of career advice that were I not in a successful job and a 22year old finishing uni then I would be prone to taking on-board and actioning it. It would also be a good job to have to help champion projects and use photography and my life skills, career skills and now my art skills to assist in the changes to the built environment and the communities they sit amongst.

The first part of the third paragraph gives me ideas for my final module which I will complete in the 2026-2027 academic year. It recommends that I look to reach out to more artists and collaborate with them and other organisations perhaps. He mentions Arts Council Applications also that I might be able to apply for to obtain funding for projects that might be worthy of the funding criteria.

The last part of the paragraph about the “very ghost of our post-service economy” onwards is very poetic and beautifully written. I wish that I could write about my own work in such a way and although I am getting better at it, that is still above my level.

The actual marks for each learning objective can be seen below, I’ve trimmed out the marking criteria for the rest of the possible scores to make it easier to read.

Assessment Rubric – Coursework (6FP011)

Criteria

Ratings

Points

Conceptual Development

20 to >13.9 ptsExcellent (70-100)Highly sophisticated and independent approach to idea generation. I also plan on carrying out some photo walks around my home town with a focus on some concrete and modern buildings. These may lend themselves to helping me reach out my feelers and continue some of the networking that has grown since I started studying at Wolves.

I’m super happy with my result this year and the previous four years and will definitely try my hardest in the following year.

Today was the day that I received my grade for this first half of my…

Read more..Results Of Fifth Year – Level 6 Part One.

[864,12,2137,5,863,1091,694
2519,49,2520,1781,622,948,1214,205,2140,1210,290,2521,2032,351,2029,2031,476,478,504
post-10689","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-artist","category-degree-course","category-dissertation-photography","category-photography","category-research","category-review","category-tutorial","tag-2519","tag-art","tag-average","tag-class","tag-exhibition","tag-feedback","tag-first","tag-future","tag-gavin","tag-grade","tag-mark","tag-networking","tag-percent","tag-photography","tag-results","tag-tutor","tag-unibob","tag-university","tag-wolverhampton","excerpt","zoom","full-without-featured","even","excerpt-0
["GET
