Day 11 – 3rd August 2026

Today was a huge planned drive from Sioux Falls KOA to Indiana Dunes State Park. It was supposed to be a 10 hour drive to get over 660 miles across the centre of the United States. The idea of staying in the State Park was to be close to the city of Chicago so we can take a walk around the city. We have planned to be in the campground on the bottom of Lake Michigan for two nights but we figure that it might be a late arrival tonight. As it happens it will feel like a much longer day owing to a gutpunch early on.

""

We headed out of the KOA and jumped on the 29 heading south towards Sioux City before heading due East. We’ve left South Dakota, headed into Nebraska again for a short moment and then Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.

Cat-Astrophe

We drove alongside the Missouri River and had received a text message over Whatsapp from our daughter Cerys, who said that the cattery where our cat Freddie was being cared for, had called her to let her know that he wasn’t feeling himself and they thought he needed to be checked out at the vets. Cerys is a registered Veterinary Nurse so we had no worries at all and at least the cattery had called someone. We continued driving and making our way to the target destination.

With Jo driving, I was in charge of the GPS on Google Maps and the phone, and not long after we’d stopped for some fuel and some food and drink I received a text message off Cerys saying it wasn’t good news and she needed to call us. I persuaded Jo to pull off the I29 into a side road but she already knew something was wrong. Upon getting a voice connection we were told by Cerys that Freddie was going to be put to sleep, euthanised, because he had been poisoned with Ethylene Glycol, otherwise known as anti-freeze. This substance poisons cats very quickly and Freddie was suffering from damaged kidneys and necrosis of the skin around his nose and mouth. His body was dying and without the euthanasia hed be in agony for the last few hours of his life. It really was the kindest thing to do. He was in the care of an organisation whose only job was to care for animals whilst their owners were away. They were trusted, and paid, to look after our cat and he’d ended up ingesting anti-freeze. Cerys was in pieces but coped remarkably well in handling the whole situation on her own and even went to the cattery to pick up his belongings after he’d been put to sleep. They showed no remorse, sympathy or anything akin to kindness to a young woman crying uncontrollably picking up the belongings of her family cat that she’s just seen being put to sleep. This made me angry beyond words, but there was nothing we could do yet. We would pick it up later in the week or when we got home. Needless to say Fairfield Kennels and Cattery never owned up to the poisoning of our cat, made us pay the fees and were absolutely disgusting. We would ultimately follow this up at a later date but for now it was RIP Freddie and I had to try and keep Jo from being in tears all day.

Dodgey

As Jo continued to drive, her lip quivered now and again thinking of the little one eyed ginger boy, but she soldiered on and before we knew it we were pulling up at Fort Dodge with 218 miles under our belt already. I took a photo of the pump at this Gas Station and as you can see the green gun is left in the pump as that is diesel in the US, whihc is the opposite of the UK. I had the Black gun in the filler cap and we’d already been in to the store to prepay for this fuel as we are unable to simply use the card payment on the machine owing to not having a Zip Code. We always filled up the tank with 87 Octane if it was available and we each double and triple checked every time we picked up the nozzle from the pump so we didn’t cross fuel and end the adventure early.

There were very few photographs taken on this day but we’d made a couple of short videos of the motorhome’s shadow on the road, in which you could make out my silhouette so I was flicking the V up etc.. There was also a Jeep Latitude 4×4 vehicle with the number plate of 84TM4N at Burns Harbor gas station later on as we refilled the tank yet again. This brought up the total of fuel put into the tank today to 62 Gallons. The US Gallon is smaller than the UK Gallon, at 3.785 litres rather than the 4.546 litres that we have in the UK but still, that’s a lot of fuel. We still had no repeat of the engine check light illuminating so we were hoping that this was all back to normal. At the gas station we’d also bought a couple of chocolate bars, with me buying the US equivalent of a Cadbury’s Caramel and Jo buying a Twix Salted Caramel. We also noted that we were a long way away from our two kids. Using Find My, we could see that we were 5576 miles away from Ewan who was working on a Cruise Ship in the Mediteranean and Cerys who was 3811 miles away, back in Shrewsbury at home.

We got to the Indiana Dunes State Park, unbelievably this is not a play on Indiana Jones, at around 8:50pm in the pitch darkness. We pulled up to the ranger’s hut and she helped us with a map and pointed a few things out to point us towards our pitch.

We headed into the park, and tried following the sketchy directions but there were no lights at all, so it was difficult to see the road/track and Jo had her phone/torch on so she could guide us with the map but it lit up the inside of the cab and I couldn’t see out of the front glass at all. We got a bit fraught here and I was worried as there were a lot of small people and kids walking around in the dark who could see me int he motorhome but I couldn’t easily see them.

We backed into our pitch for the night and then connected up the electric before sitting down enjoying the chocolate bars, writing journals, and having a chat about the troublesome day that we’d experienced. We had made it through, with some tears, some silliness, some laughing and a lot of gratitude for the people who had helped us with the Freddie situation. We had 33177 miles on the odometer which added up to us completing 661 miles today. The gas had cost $231 today too, but we were fully stocked for what came next.

We looked at the uber app so we could estimate the cost of getting to Chicago tomorrow and it showed as $85 each way. I spent some time taking a look at the train options too as I’d noticed there was a train that ran along the coast of Lake Michigan.

Day 12 – Chicago

Up early and before we set off to Chicago for the day we had a xouple of phone calls with the folks back home. A catch up with Cerys to check she was ok, then Jo’s parents too. Then a walk down to the beach at Lake Michigan. Our pitch on the site was chosen many months before so it had relatively quick access to the beach and short walk. It was a lovely little stroll through a wood or forest, there were a few skeeters about but the walk was pleasant enough and we ended up at the beach. It was reasonably busy already and Jo had a paddle in the water whilst picking up some pebbles that would be destined for the UK and a painting session. She wrote Freddie’s name in the sand and once we were calm and relaxed we headed back to the van.

We had worked out that there was a train line about a 45 minute walk away and we battled with the idea of catching a taxi to get there, but in the end we decided to walk to Dune Park Station. It was a hot day and as we were walking through the park a huge and loud siren began blaring into the air. It was something one might hear in the event of an apocalypse and whilst we were a bit startled by it, we kept walking and it got louder. I was recording using my iPhone and also my small digital recorder and then we looked into it and found that the sirens in this area are tested every Tuesday morning.

Warm Walk

After being concerned by the noise we continued to move on anyway and headed for the Dune Park Station. We got there not long after a train left the platform. We entered the ticket office/wiaitng room and managed to buy a ticket or two for the next train. We would also have a train for the return later on this evening.

Before the train arrived I had a wander up the platform and took a few images of the place as well as when another train turned up going the other direction. We climbed aboard the train and realised it was a double decker so we went upstairs to see what this looked like. It was bench seats along each edge and a big gap in the middle so the conductor could see up and we could see down into the downstairs area. We rode along the railway going to the city and went through places like Gary, Indiana which we would later learn suffered from a huge tornado after we returned to the UK.

""

We arrived at Millennium Station in the city centre about an hour later and found ourselves int he station that Batman rides his Batpod through in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight movie. Not the last time we’ll be referencing these movies!! We popped out into the park and found our way towards “The Bean” or it’s proper title “Cloud Gate” by the sculptor Anish Kapoor. A huge highly polished stainless steel bean shaped structure from 2004 that was even more fascinating when stood under it looking straight up into the belly of it. It was tricky seeing what shape the actual sculpture is because the reflections make it almost impossible to make sense of what your eyes are viewing.

Car Park Begins

From here I persuaded my wife to join me on a quest for a car park, multi-storey of course, on West Randolph Street and when we arrived there I couldn’t immediately see a door to get us in, Jo spotted it and within a few minutes were were up on the top floor on the roof of the car park surrounded by huge tower buildings. The reason to be here was Batman related, I’m a huge Batman nut by the way in case you hadn’t realised that already. This sort of thing is call “Set-jetting” a play on the old jet-setting meaning that you jet around or travel to movie sets. This car park featured in Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I particularly like the scene where Bale’s character of Batman jumps from a high floor to land on the top of a white van on the ground floor that is driving around the spiral ramp.

From here it was time to grab a bite to eat so nearby a bar fit the bill and we went in for a drink and a lunch. It was The Randolph and it was in the middle of some great streets which housed the L train (short for elevated) which drives over the people, cars and other transport and winds it’s way through the city. It was the same as Shinjuku in Tokyo with the metro/subway trains riding high above the roads, it was fascinating and I kept stopping to take photos of trains. There was a street here where we stopped into a stationery shop so Jo could buy some gifts and this street also featured in The Dark Knight when Bruce Wayne crashes his Lamborghini Murcielago (the Spanish word for Bat) to save someone’s life.

""

""

Transport that identifies a place is important to me and the L train in the above photo riding above the Bus with its familiar markings tells a story of where this image was made. I was in my element wandering around the city of Chicago and the light was awesome in some places, whilst flat in a couple of others.

Bat-Boat Architecture

We had a bit more of a walk and decided that we would go out on a boat trip on the Chicago River which was to take us up and down the river amongst the bridges and huge skyscrapers, as well as some of the more interesting buildings. We took a seat on the top deck of the boat and were well placed to hear the guide who was giving an interesting talk as we drifted along. Then a few “Wall Street Types” sat next to us and they were talking all the time. One of the guys said to his friend “How many times have you been on this boat now forty or fifty times?” which was a bit annoying as it was the first time we’d been on there. We put up with it and had a good time, with some further mentions of Batman owing to the city being a big location for the Nolan Trilogy.

""

Looking back through my photos of the trip I can see the building that features at the start of the film when the bank heist guys smash a window with the biplane/grapnel gun and the building that doubles as the Bank too. Some of the bridges that we went under also feature in the movies as the entrance to “The Narrows” a slummy part of Gotham City. There was a huge tower with TRUMP emblazoned on the front that also features in the movie, but it was all a bit garish in real life. There were other buildings of interest too, such as the Sears Tower, the “Corn On The Cobs” Marina Towers Condo Association the Brutalist 55 West Wacker Drive and even the Chicago Board Of Trade building that doubles up as Wayne Tower in the centre of Gotham City.

L Train Landscape

We docked again and continued the walk around the city, this time with a non-Caped Crusader themed target. Wells & Kinzie Parking garage was recommended by a US colleague at work on a photo forum we use as part of Viva Engage, as a place to visit for a lovely photo of an L train coming between a canyon of glass buildings. We found the garage fairly easily, made our way into the structure and headed up to the 7th floor, walking along the floor amongst the parked vehicles we found the “window” or a gap in the concrete panels and looked out to see the railway track carrying out an S bend through the buildings and hovering above the road.

Jo and I stayed here through dusk and into the time after sunset, I had some lovely photos on the Q3, iPhone and M6 using some differing settings. I tried it as low an ISO as possible for the first few and then as it got darker, the ISO was auto adjusting so I altered it to full manual and carried on shooting. I also tried a longer shutter speed to assist in the panning of a photo following the train with the focal point. There were some good photos and bad photos that I made in this position, the below image is an underexposed shot on Portra 400 in the M6 with a 35mm Voigtlander 1.8 lens on the front. It was a 1/60th second shot and the other couple I made here on film also look two stops underexposed. I think that the light in between the buildings in the background have biased the meter in the camera.

We moved down a couple of floors a slightly lower vantage point to get more heads onto the rail track and trains, it provided more context in terms of the cars and people on the street beneath. The angle I was shooting from up high meant I was avoiding including too much of this detail.

Returns

Once finished here, and no sign of any Gotham heroes, we headed back to Millennium Station to board the train back to the campground. We got on the train at 21:00 hours and it was quite noisy with people having fun but they soon ebbed away as we travelled through the suburbs and outer districts of the city. We arrived at Dune Park station at around 22:00 hours and then had to face a spooky walk home in the dark. Jo had her mobile phone torch on again to help guide the way, there were some nerves about the noises and the possibility of wildlife being around. I hadn’t seen any notices of bears whilst in the park, but there were a few signs warning of Raccoons and other animals so we were aware of this. There was a tremendous noise also coming from the bushes and trees from the insects all shouting out to each other. At one point I noticed a glowing light in the air too, which turned out to be a firefly, a FIREFLY!!!, I have never ever seen one of these creatures before and was made up to see this little green bioluminescent brightness. We walked on in the pitch black, without the torch there was no light at all, the footpath melded into the surroundings and we would have easily got lost. Jo’s phone was real low on power and she had been panicking that we wouldn’t have enough power to light the way back and I had a bit in my phone too just in case.

We did 22500 steps in and around Chicago on this day but got back to the van just before 23:00 hours, sat and wrote our journals before heading off for a late night shower and shave and then getting into the relatively ant free bed. The next day we were planning on visit the beach and then heading to the next destination, Sandusky KOA.

In the last post, we read about how we picked up the motorhome from Indie Campers in Fremont, California, and travelled through Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and Lake Mead, ending up at Monument Valley.
