Out with the drone this week in the darkness just with the last vestiges of blue hour hanging on. I took the DJI Mini 4 Pro out and launched it to take some photos of the frontage of the buildings that were formerly the HQ of Shropshire County Council.
Once I’d received the confirmation that Home Point was updated, I also got another saying that due to low ambient light levels the obstacle avoidance system would not be effective. I chose to continue with the mission, paying extra special attention to the surroundings and distances from parts of the building.
First shot was a picture of the front of the main building from a ways away. Its a pleasing photo with the blue hour light on the reflected horizon, the lights and colours of the rest of the glass reflections too.

From here it was time to fly the length of the fourth floor, closer in and catch the reflections of the traffic on the roads behind as well as the sky’s last burst of light. The video came out quite well also as well as the photos that you can see beneath.

The videos from these shoots can be seen on YouTube at my channel
It was very nerve-wracking flying my drone this close to the building with no obstacle avoidance enabled. I’ve lost two drones in the past to various forces and aI didn’t fancy losing this one. I was able to gather some good photographs and video footage that will possibly come in handy for the future of this project and the archive of the building in the future.
Now I just need to go back when it is snowing for the full gamut of situations to photograph the building in. If you’re interested in taking a look at this building before the next phase of its life starts you can find it on this map beneath.
Future
Talking of the future, there has been an article in the Shropshire Star report that the council might retain the Shirehall buildings now, as it is cheaper than building another purpose built HQ somewhere else.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens now. What use is documenting a building that is going to continue to be used?
