Semester 2 – Week 12 – Final Tutorial

Last teaching week at University this week, upcoming sessions are to prepare the work for exhibition and assisting with the degree show.

Gavin was in so we had a brief tutorial. He told us about an accident his partner had last week which reinforces the need to adhere to H&S when drilling holes in walls.

We talked about my Portfolio and I showed him the current configuration, I discussed that I was not happy with the valve picture being in there as it looked out of place. Gavin also mentioned that the photo of the court room glass panes and roof skylight was also not needed as it was covered by the stronger picture of the skylights in a more straightforward image. There was also an image of the reflections in the window that didn’t fit in with the location so we talked about moving it out to the latter part of the slide deck.

Gavin mentioned that the Coventry Evening Telegraph Refurbishment project was similar to the Shirehall redevelopment in that it had been left empty to degrade until it was picked up and turned into a Hotel

Gavin was ok with my journal document and is ok with my note that I have completed the dissertation update ready for the upload to the assignment.

Dani brought back my book, Tokyo Nobody, by Masataka Nakano which I’d lent her earlier in the year.

Once I’d updated Gavin with my notes it’s time to get up to the store room and pick up my prints and prepare to take them home, including the intermediate show print. I wrapped the intermediate print in plastic and bubble wrap and then took this and the A0 print down to the basement.

Masters Of The Universe

We also had a visit from Clive Moore who is the leader for the Masters Course and he discussed with a few of us the options about moving forward after the graduation from the degree course.

He said that the masters course is a one year course when studied full time and two years when studied art time. At the moment the course for part time students is on Tuesdays.

The course is known as a Masters in Digital and Visual Communications

The entry qualification is a 2.1 from the undergraduate degree, but having just finished the degree it will obviously allow you to join the masters. If you move to the Masters straight from the degree you also get a loyalty discount of 20% off the fees.

Clive said that the course allows the students to try out all sorts of other art practices from glass blowing, glass slumping, pottery, graphic design, illustration, painting, fine art etc. There are opportunities to work with students from different fields and experiences.

He also said that there is a mix of students from all over the globe who are all eager to help each other and any other students who sign up for the course. Clive then offered to hold a short demo with more information on and then went up to do so.

I took the opportunity to catch up on a few items then ask Euripides for a quick chat, which he couldn’t manage at the time as he was busy finishing something off. Then he was tied up with other students and I never spoke to him. I decided then to leave and take my large prints home so I said goodbye to all my coursemates who are continuing to prepare for the degree show which starts in June.

On the way back home I decided to pop into the Shropshire Archives and see if I could pick up some of the pamphlets and leaflets that were being sold off as they have duplicates of them. I picked up a couple of leaflets, one about the Shirehalls before the concrete Shirehall that we have today. The second document was a Guide Map of Shrewsbury from before 1967. It shows a map of Shrewsbury and it is before my house was built as the road doesn’t appear on the map. The third leaflet I bought was a small history of New St Chad’s and its Architect.

Then it was time to go home and here I am writing up these notes ready for final teaching session entry into the journal for the year! The last post for the year will likely be a round-up of the Level 6 Part One where I can summarise my learnings and frustrations from my fifth year of study, then think about what will happen next year in my sixth and final year of this degree course!!
