With an assignment called the Final Review to submit before 10am today I had stayed up finishing off the submission as best as aI could , until about 1:30am this morning.
I know I’m not a last minute Larry usually but I’ve not yet had back my films from AG Photolab so I can’t scan them in and prep them for printing with Jim. I have a single frame from the previous three rolls of Redscale that I consider as usable but I would ideally like another two, to represent the architecture at the Dudley Zoo (see previous post). I revisited last Sunday to shoot another three rolls of the Lomography Redscale XR with another two stops of light to help with improving the exposure.
Late Night
As a result I’d spent the evening finishing off the video of shooting the film again and then finishin gthe write up of the powerpoint slides to present to the group.
When I mentioned this in the group this morning there were no nods of agreement or knowledge of this so I figured I may have got the dates wrong, or not been told that it was changing. When Sam realised this was still in the module for today he changed it until next week. Cool, hopefully I’ll get the films back and get to print before next week.
I’ve already booked a slot in the Print Support Hub with Jim next Monday afternoon on the assumption that I will have the negs and have had time to scan them. It’s going to be tight though, as I’m away this coming weekend with a Street Photography Workshop on Sat and Sun with Matt Stuart in London.

I’ll share my presentation for that Review once I have the final images in there and it’s ready for publication.
Exhibition
Today though we were discussing the ultimate destination of those images, the exhibition titled “The Matter Of The Black Country” which will run at Centrala, Digbeth in Birmingham in January 2025.
- First time since 2017 since wolves have exhibited in Birmingham
- We will be installing on Monday the 13th January 2025.
- Meet at centrala for 11am for the hang and set up.
- Prints should be in the room on first floor of the MK building ahead of this date.
- Drivers with vehicles will be picking stuff up to take to Digbeth and should meet at 9am at the basement
- Bring tools, such as drills, rawl plugs, spirit levels, screwdrivers etc.
- All 1.5m centre from the floor.
- Once all is hung and set up the Opening night will be on Thursday 16th January from 6:30pm til 8:30pm
- Deinstall on the 20th January, in a reverse manner to the install, same drivers but it should be quicker to take down than to put up.
To prepare the room for the exhibition we brainstormed a few ideas.
- Bring some kitsch plates in for the snacks
- Perhaps make some cobs, bring in pork scratching, Black Country snacks, pork pies,
- Perhaps beer mats with images of the work on alongside our Instagram links QR code.
- Dress code smart casual, colours of black county flag
- Make some prints a4 and sell for £10 each, Sam said there was some interest in prints already, so I may get Jim to print a biggy and then use the Colour darkroom to create some 8×10 C-prints.

BIMM Brief
On the afternoon of the 20th once back at the School Of Art we’ll receive the brief on the BIMM assignment, which is working with an artist or group from the BIMM University to produce some photos of them for Promo, in Practice Sessions and Performing. We will be working in pairs which I find a challenge due to having limited availability with working full time,
Redscale & Cross Processing
Euripides came and hat a chat with me on the topic of Redscale as he’d heard that I was using it for the project. He showed me some awesome photos he’s made using the redscale films, mainly films he’s turned around himself.
He suggested that rather than buying the Lomography films, that I buy some expired film from Dan in the stores for £2.50 a roll and then do the switcheroo to turn it into redscale film. £2.50 for a roll of 120? Awesome, I went and bought 8 rolls there and then, they expired in 2015 but have been stored in the freezer so it should be ok. I have researched it and apparently 1 year after it comes out of the freezer is when it should all be used up by. I can change some of it to redscale and then the rest I can use as standard colour film.
Euripides also talked about coming to see him and having a chat about it along with cross processing which can be done in the studio labs too. Cross processing is something I’ve not done before but it is developing negative film in slide developer or developing positive (slides) film in C41 developer. The cross processing gives some unpredictable results that can lead to happy accidents and wonderfully coloured and toned images.
With the work completed for the day I headed back to Shrewsbury and managed to get to the opticians just before closing to pick up my new pair of Varifocal safety glasses with the side shields fitted. I was expecting the negatives to be at home by the time I got there, but it’s now 23:55 and they’re not here. Maybe tomorrow.
